Traveling in Iceland

There is no single way of getting to know the country and it’s up to the individual to select the options that best suit your needs and mood. Iceland offers a variety of stunning and contrasting landscapes spread all over the country. Some may prefer to discover them driving, others hiking and others again on horseback or by some other means. You can also decide whether you want to stay in a nice hotel, camping site or rent a summer house – the choice is yours.

If you’re looking for something close to Reykjavík and maybe even just want to take a day-trip, there is no shortage of beautiful mountains and lakes to explore and walk around.

If you’re interested in hiking, you should visit the site of the Iceland Touring Association. Their main aim is to facilitate, promote and organize travel within the country. The association brings together hiking and nature enthusiasts and will allow you to experience Iceland in a group of like-minded people guided by locals. This isn’t limited to hiking, since it also includes a variety of tours to members and non-members alike, all year round: hiking, cycling and skiing, day trips, weekend tours and longer trips.

“Hiking is a fantastic way to explore Iceland’s infinite natural beauty and discover all of its hidden treasures.”  You can find information about some nice hiking trails near the capital area here and here.

It must be stressed that it is extremely important to stay safe during your travels, be well prepared and make sure you inform people of your plans. The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) offers all travelers in Iceland the option to register information about your intended trip on their website, so that a search or rescue operation can be launched in the event of something going wrong. Good preparation is always the key for a successful trip.

During wintertime most of the highlands, as well as many roads, are closed. Make sure you get information about the area.

The weather and important websites

The weather in Iceland is everyone’s favorite topic of conversation. Iceland enjoys a cool temperate maritime climate thanks to the Gulf Stream, but the weather is known to change quickly and often. Icelanders have a saying: “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” No matter the season, you should always be prepared for quick changes in weather, and you should always have wind and water-resistant outerwear as well as extra thermal layers on hand before heading out on excursions.
